A.T. Kearney’s Global Business Policy Council convened its annual CEO Retreat in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 11–13, 2018. The theme of this year’s Retreat was “Weathering the Anti-Globalization Storm.” Convened less than one month after significant escalation in the US–China trade war, our conversations focused on the outlook for the international trading system, geopolitics, and technology. The energy transition and climate change were also high on our agenda, as yet another massive hurricane made landfall about 300 miles east of New Orleans just one day before our deliberations began.
New Orleans, a colorful city that knows what it means to turn challenge and adversity into opportunity and growth, was a fitting locale for deliberations regarding the role of businesses in this challenging climate. A thriving port, the city straddles the delta where the Mississippi River meets the Gulf of Mexico—an American gateway to the rest of the world. After the overwhelming damage of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005—which were not the first to try to wipe the city off the map—New Orleans was reborn. Today, its long-time residents say the city is brighter and better than ever.
